About five years ago, a rancher just north of Brenham, Texas, reached out to us about a massive pecan tree that had been blown over by a windstorm. We were able to go down there and harvest the log, which weighed 30,380 pounds. We brought it back to the mill, sawed it into seven live-edge slabs, and then carefully air-dried them for the next four and a half years. We recently kiln-dried the slabs down to a 7% moisture content.

These are some of the largest slabs we’ve ever worked with. This particular slab is 3 3/16 inches thick, almost 80 inches wide at the top with an average width of 65 inches, and nearly 20 feet long. This is the first slab from this flitch to be truly flattened and planed, with six more becoming available soon.
