The following video shows the process for making a 60″ diameter table. The joinery on the base features through mortise and tenon joints. The joints are assembled using a technique called drawboarding, where pins are hammered though offset holes to pull the joints tight together.

Sometimes, a disaster creates new growth. The 2007-2008 drought in Central Texas killed many large trees that couldn’t survive with the reduced rainfall. Brandon Berdoll began logging those dead specimens and founded Berdoll Sawmill near Bastrop in 2009. Salvaged Tree Wins Award at Texas Furniture Makers Show

A severe windstorm that tore though the Waco, Texas area in 2010 brought craftsmen Brandon Berdoll just what he needed to win awards at the 2013 Texas Furniture Makers Show in Kerrvile, Texas. The heavy winds uprooted a massive 121 year-old Pecan tree along the banks of the Brazos River.

Yesterday I took a leisurely drive from Austin TX, out to Cedar Creek TX, to visit Brandon Berdoll at the Berdoll Sawmill & Furniture Co. I was very impressed by the quality of primarily Texas woods Brandon has on hand. The mesquite was truly unbelievable, ranging from 4/4 boards up to 12/4 or 16/4 slabs. He also has some crazy long pecan.
